Who Will Rule The New Internet?

Josh Quittner recently wrote an interesting article for Time Online which looks at the future control of the Internet. He postulates that after Microsoft, the next player(s) to come out on top of the ‘Internet user experience’ will be between Apple, Google and Facebook. With historical transitions from IBM’S corporate mainframe to Microsoft’s dominance via the personal PC, the question becomes, who will be the next ‘platform’ that defines the web? As Windows loses it preeminent position as the platform from which people ‘view’ the web, there are several key players that can define our experience on the Internet, and therefore supplant Microsoft. The article goes onto discuss the concepts of the more open platform of Google vs. currently more closed environments such as Apple and Facebook, but how Google will also have to work hard at open itself up to the more avante garde social networking aspect of the Facebook platform. But watch out for Facebook as it ramps up its F8 Developers platform.
